Heavyweight Trio Secure Spots in CAF Champions League Quarters

Al Ahly, Espérance Sportive de Tunis, and Mamelodi Sundowns have all booked their places in the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League, reinforcing their status as African football powerhouses. These three clubs are also set to represent the continent in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, alongside Morocco’s Wydad AC.

Progression to the Knockouts

Al Ahly FC and Espérance Sportive de Tunis punched their tickets to the quarter-finals with strong performances on matchday 5. South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns FC, however, secured their qualification on the final matchday, adding to the drama of the group stage. The draw for the quarter-finals is expected soon.

Morocco’s Wydad AC, despite qualifying for the FIFA Club World Cup, are not participating in this season’s CAF Champions League.

Standout Performances

Al Ahly: A Free-Scoring Force

The Egyptian giants were one of the most prolific teams in the group stage, netting 14 goals in six matches. Star performers included Hussein El Shahat and Wessam Abou Ali, each scoring three goals, while Emam Ashour led the way with four goals, including a memorable hat-trick in a decisive 3-1 victory against Stade d'Abidjan.

Despite their impressive attacking display, Al Ahly finished second in their group, behind South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, after a 2-1 loss in their final match.

“I encouraged Ashour to be more involved in the opposition’s penalty area, and his skills have allowed him to thrive,” said Al Ahly coach Marcel Koller.

Espérance: Solid and Balanced

Espérance showcased a robust defense, conceding just three goals in the group stage—the second-best record after MC Alger. Their attack was equally formidable, with 12 goals scored, thanks in part to Achraf Jabri. The 23-year-old forward, recently returned from a loan spell, scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory over G.D. Sagrada Esperança on the final day.

With a strong head-to-head record against Pyramids FC, Espérance claimed the top spot in Group D.

Mamelodi Sundowns: Last-Minute Drama

South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns kept fans on edge, securing their quarter-final spot on the final day with a draw against AS FAR. After an early goal from Peter Shalulile, the team held on to secure the point they needed to advance. The Sundowns, led by coach Miguel Cardoso, are now in the quarter-finals for the seventh consecutive season.

What’s Next?

The CAF Champions League quarter-finals promise intense matchups as these heavyweights aim for continental glory. With their performances in the group stage, Al Ahly, Espérance, and Mamelodi Sundowns have set high expectations as the competition heats up.
