Gregersen: Norway Will Go Wild If We Qualify for the World Cup

Stian Gregersen Discusses Erling Haaland, Norway’s Chances for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Defeating Lionel Messi, and His Goals with Atlanta United

Stian Gregersen is entering his second season in Major League Soccer (MLS) with Atlanta United, while also serving as a key defensive player for Norway’s national team. He shares his insights on competing against Inter Miami in the MLS playoffs, the unique style of play in MLS, and witnessing the brilliance of Erling Haaland firsthand.

A New Season in MLS and High Hopes for Norway

Gregersen finds himself at the intersection of two thrilling footballing journeys. At club level, he plays in the renowned Mercedes-Benz Stadium—known as ‘The Benz’—which is set to host matches for both the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and FIFA World Cup 2026. On the international stage, he has the privilege of sharing the field with Erling Haaland, one of football’s biggest superstars.

2024 is a pivotal year for both his club and country. Norway is striving to qualify for its first World Cup since 1998, while Atlanta United aims to reclaim the MLS Cup title under the leadership of fellow Norwegian coach Ronny Deila. In an in-depth conversation with FIFA, Gregersen reflects on his ambitions, his team’s evolution, and his experience training alongside Haaland.

Excitement for the New Season in Atlanta

FIFA: What excites you most about the upcoming season with Atlanta United?

Gregersen: It’s a fresh start with a new coach, and I’m eager to see how we evolve. We have a lot to prove, and I believe we can do it this season, especially with Deila’s vision and tactical approach.

Reflections on His First MLS Season

Gregersen admits that adjusting to MLS was a challenge.

"It was a new country, a different environment, and we had a tough season with ups and downs. We changed coaches, but making the playoffs was a big achievement. Eliminating Miami was huge, but we still have room for improvement," he explains.

One of the biggest surprises for him has been the league’s competitive nature. "Unlike other leagues, where top teams consistently dominate, in MLS, any team can win on any given day. The competition is fierce."

Eliminating Lionel Messi and Inter Miami

Defeating Miami in the playoffs was a major highlight for Gregersen and his team.

"They had the advantage of playing at home, but we put in a strong performance. People doubted us, but within our squad, we believed in ourselves and got the job done."

The Unique Style of Play in MLS

Gregersen enjoys the dynamic nature of MLS games.

"The football here is fast-paced, almost like a ping-pong match. It’s more back-and-forth compared to the more controlled European style. I find it exciting and engaging."

The Passionate Fan Base in Atlanta

Playing in Atlanta has been an incredible experience.

"The fans here are fantastic. We have the highest attendance in the league, and the atmosphere is incredible. In Europe, fans can turn on you quickly after a couple of losses, but here, they stay supportive through the highs and lows. That unity is special."

Why Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the Best in the USA

Gregersen considers Mercedes-Benz Stadium to be the best venue in the country.

"It’s a powerful stadium with an electric atmosphere. The ability to close the roof will be crucial for the World Cup since summers here are extremely hot. I’m certain players will love playing here."

Dreaming of Playing in a World Cup Match with Norway

Representing Norway in a World Cup match in Atlanta would be a dream come true for Gregersen.

"We talked about this in the national team when we won our Nations League group. This is our second chance at qualification, and we believe we can make it."

Norway’s Road to World Cup Qualification

With Germany or Italy potentially in their qualifying group, Norway faces tough competition.

"Those are big teams, but the rest of the opponents are also strong. Every national team is well-organized, and the competition is intense. If I had to choose, I think Italy would be a better matchup for us than Germany."

What World Cup Qualification Would Mean for Norway

If Norway qualifies, Gregersen believes the entire country will erupt in celebration.

"It would be massive. We haven’t been in a World Cup for over 20 years, and everyone talks about it. This new generation of players—Haaland, Ødegaard, Sørloth, Nusa—is incredibly talented. We deserve to compete at the highest level."

Playing Alongside Erling Haaland

Gregersen has had the opportunity to play with Haaland since their days at Molde, and he has witnessed his rise to becoming one of the best strikers in the world.

"It’s incredible to see his journey. He’s so clinical—everything he does is world-class. Even in training, you’ll see him take a shot and… bam! Goal. Training against him is a great challenge for me as a defender."

The Key to Norway’s Qualification

Gregersen emphasizes that maturity and smart play will be essential for Norway’s qualification.

"Our squad is young, but we need to demonstrate composure and tactical awareness. If we stay focused, I believe we are ready to take that step."
