Former world number one Naomi Osaka is eager to compete with the best again after securing a hard-fought three-set victory against Yuliia Starodubtseva in the first round of the Miami Open.
Osaka staged a comeback from a set down to defeat Ukraine’s Starodubtseva 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, marking her first win since the Australian Open second round in January. This victory comes after Osaka described her first-round loss to Camila Osorio at Indian Wells as the “worst match I’ve ever played in my life.”
“I want to play with the big dogs so badly. I see everyone performing at such a high level, and I want to do the same,” said Osaka after her two-and-a-half-hour battle against Starodubtseva. “But I have to remember it’s a process.”
The four-time Grand Slam champion has taken multiple breaks throughout her career, prioritizing her mental health and taking a maternity leave following the birth of her daughter.
