Irish golf star Shane Lowry has announced that his teammate, the newly crowned Masters champion Rory McIlroy, will be back in action next week to defend their title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Despite taking a brief break after securing a career Grand Slam at Augusta, McIlroy—who recently added another Masters trophy to his list of achievements—plans to rejoin Lowry for the team event starting Thursday in Louisiana. Lowry emphasized that the decision was entirely up to McIlroy and that he wouldn't have been disappointed had his friend opted to rest.
"I spoke with Rory on Wednesday morning. We're all set," said Shane Lowry in an interview with Golfweek. "Honestly, I didn’t want him to feel pressured to play just for my sake. But he’s eager to get back out there."
The duo previously clinched victory at last year's Zurich Classic after a dramatic playoff win over Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer. Their chemistry on the course and friendship off it have made them a standout team in the event.
Meanwhile, Shane Lowry’s age—36—hasn’t slowed him down, and he continues to deliver top-tier performances in high-stakes tournaments. His partner McIlroy, now a five-time major winner, is also set to play the upcoming Truist Championship in Philadelphia (May 8–11), followed by the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow starting May 15.
As Lowry prepares for the upcoming events, fans have also taken an interest in his personal life, including Shane Lowry’s wife, Wendy Honner, a nurse known for her low-profile yet supportive presence throughout his career. The couple, often seen together at major events, shares a daughter and resides in Ireland.
With McIlroy back and Lowry in top form, all eyes will be on the pair as they aim to repeat their Zurich success—and possibly build on Shane Lowry’s Masters finishes in future tournaments.
