TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Baker Mayfield has revitalized his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and, in the process, established himself as a “coach-maker.”
Mayfield’s standout performance with the Buccaneers in 2023 played a key role in helping Dave Canales secure the head coaching position with the Carolina Panthers after just one season as an offensive coordinator. Under Liam Coen’s guidance, Mayfield has taken his game to an even higher level, making Coen a top contender for head coaching opportunities in the upcoming offseason.
The Buccaneers (9-7) face a crucial matchup against the Saints (5-11) on Sunday, where a win would secure their fourth consecutive NFC South title. With Mayfield leading the charge and the offense firing on all cylinders, Tampa Bay has a strong chance of extending its postseason run well into January. Last year, the Buccaneers reached the divisional round before falling to Detroit.
As Coen’s profile continues to rise, it’s only a matter of time before he receives interviews from other teams. The Jets, Saints, and Bears are already searching for new head coaches, with more vacancies likely to arise in the coming weeks.
For now, Coen remains laser-focused on his role with the Buccaneers.
“That was one of the best Sundays I’ve had in a long time, man,” Coen said on Thursday, reflecting on the Buccaneers’ dominating 48-14 victory over the Panthers. “I wasn’t thinking about anything else besides this team. At the end of the day, those opportunities can wait if it’s meant to be. Right now, we just have to keep doing the right things and moving forward.”
