Borussia Dortmund has announced the departure of head coach Nuri Sahin following a 2-1 defeat against Bologna in the UEFA Champions League. This marks the team’s fourth consecutive loss across all competitions, leaving them in a disappointing 13th place in the 36-team Champions League standings and 10th in the Bundesliga.
In the interim, the team will be managed by U-19 coach Mike Tullberg, as Dortmund searches for a permanent replacement ahead of their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, scheduled to kick off on June 14 in the USA.
Managing director Lars Ricken expressed gratitude for Sahin’s efforts but acknowledged the decision was necessary: “We deeply value Nuri Sahin and his contributions. However, after four straight losses, only one win in the last nine matches, and our current standing in the Bundesliga, we’ve unfortunately lost confidence in meeting our objectives. This was a difficult decision for me personally but unavoidable after the Bologna match.”
Nuri Sahin, who took over as head coach in June 2024, managed 12 wins in 27 matches during his tenure. Reflecting on his departure, Sahin stated: “Regrettably, we’ve fallen short of achieving Borussia Dortmund’s goals this season. I wish this exceptional club nothing but the best.”
Dortmund now faces the challenge of finding a coach to steer them through upcoming competitions and toward their aspirations for success on the global stage.
