Liverpool’s dominance in the Premier League this season appears unstoppable as they extend their lead at the top of the table to an impressive 13 points.
No team in the history of English football’s top division, dating back to the 1888-89 season, has ever held such a commanding lead at this stage and failed to win the title.
Match of the Day host Gary Lineker summed it up succinctly: “It’s no longer a title race—it’s turning into a procession.”
The Reds have suffered just one league defeat this season and continued their winning form with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Wednesday. Meanwhile, their closest challengers, Arsenal, have stumbled, dropping points in consecutive matches, including a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot remains cautious despite the substantial advantage. “There are still 10 games left. In March, we only play one Premier League match, so our focus isn’t on the long-term picture right now,” he stated. “The players will have a short break before we shift our attention to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, however, refuses to give up. Before the match against Forest, he defiantly declared that he would concede the title “over [his] dead body.” Following the draw, he maintained his stance, telling the BBC: “The situation hasn’t changed in a week, two weeks, or three months. All we can do is win our games and see where we end up.”
Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman is convinced that Liverpool are unstoppable. “They are in complete control, and everyone else is simply falling away, making it easier for them,” he remarked.
Currently, Nottingham Forest sit third, trailing Arsenal by six points, while Manchester City—winners of the past four Premier League titles—are a further point behind.
Historically, only one team has ever lost a 13-point lead in the Premier League and failed to win the title—Manchester United in the 1997-98 season, when Arsenal surged past them. However, that collapse occurred earlier in the season.
As Liverpool edge closer to their second Premier League crown—and their record-equalling 20th English league title—fans and pundits alike are left wondering: when will the official coronation take place?
