Sean McVay Prioritizes Keeping Matthew Stafford as Rams' Quarterback

The Los Angeles Rams have allowed quarterback Matthew Stafford to explore his market value with other teams, generating significant offseason buzz. However, head coach Sean McVay remains committed to retaining Stafford and ensuring he continues leading the team in L.A.

Speaking on the Fitz & Whit podcast, McVay addressed the situation: “There’s no question we want him to be our quarterback. The challenge is balancing short-term and long-term considerations while ensuring he gets what he’s worth.” He emphasized that while both sides have their own perspectives, Stafford’s talent has naturally drawn considerable interest from other teams.

Since arriving via trade in 2021, Stafford has been a cornerstone for the Rams. He tied his career-high with 41 touchdown passes in his first season and led the team to a Super Bowl LVI victory. His Pro Bowl selection in 2023 and multiple playoff appearances further cement his value to the franchise.

However, at 37 years old and heading into his 17th NFL season, Stafford carries a history of injuries. During his time with the Rams, he has undergone elbow surgery, suffered a spinal cord contusion in 2022, and sprained his UCL.

In July 2024, Stafford and the Rams agreed to a revised contract, securing $23.5 million in guarantees but reducing most of his guaranteed money for 2025. This arrangement set the stage for future reassessments—bringing them to the pivotal decision point they now face.

McVay and the Rams will now determine the best path forward, balancing their financial flexibility with Stafford’s continued leadership on the field.
