Travis Kelce's Super Bowl LIX Struggles Raise Retirement Speculation

NEW ORLEANS – Travis Kelce endured a tough night in Super Bowl LIX.

The Kansas City Chiefs' star tight end managed only four receptions on six targets, accumulating 39 yards in a crushing 40-22 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles at Caesars Superdome on Sunday.

Kelce’s underwhelming performance has reignited speculation about his future in the league. Though he previously suggested he could play for three more seasons, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday that Kelce remains undecided about retirement.

Reflecting on the loss, Kelce admitted, "We haven't played that bad all year." However, he did not comment on his future when speaking to the media post-game.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who also struggled during the defeat, refused to speculate on Kelce’s next move.

"That’s a decision only Travis can make," Mahomes stated. "He has given everything to this team and to the game. He’s a joy to play with and a thrill for fans to watch. You can tell he still has a lot of football left in him—he always delivers in big moments."

Mahomes acknowledged the physical toll of the sport but emphasized Kelce's legacy: "If he decides to walk away, he’s already a first-ballot Hall of Famer. But he still loves the game, and whatever he chooses, we’ll welcome him back with open arms. We love him for who he is on and off the field."

Kelce also praised the Eagles for their dominant performance. "Hats off to them, man. They got after us in all three phases," he admitted.

Kelce’s recent struggles extend beyond the Super Bowl. He posted just two catches for 19 yards in the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills. Given his track record as one of the league’s greatest tight ends, Sunday’s struggles raise questions: Was this just an off night, or is his legendary career nearing its end?

According to Rapoport, Kelce’s final decision could hinge on this disappointing finale. At 35 years old, will he choose to end his career on a Super Bowl defeat, or will he return for another championship run? The answer remains uncertain.
